About the
DeVries Student
Art Gallery
Dedicated solely to showcasing work by Frostic School of Art students, the Eleanor and Robert DeVries Student Art Gallery is among the most dynamic exhibition spaces at the Richmond Center. Located immediately to your right when entering the building from the far side walkway that also leads to South Khorman, the student gallery is nearly 1300 square feet with soaring ceilings and a deck of second story windows that provide a bird’s eye view of the gallery from the upstairs student lounge. Unfortunately, the lounge is closed for the 2020-2021 academic year because of the pandemic.
Exhibitions in the DeVries typically change on a weekly basis and often represent a student’s first official show within an institutional setting. With support form the exhibitions staff, students design and install their exhibitions over the weekend and the show opens to the public on Mondays and remains on view for one week. In the past, this milestone moment was celebrated by students and their friends and families with an opening reception. Unfortunately the circumstances of the pandemic preclude such events this semester, but we look forward to the possibility of these returning soon when it is safe to do so.

About Robert and Eleanor DeVries

The generosity of Eleanor and Robert DeVries continues to enhance the student experience at the Frostic School of Art and within the College of Fine Arts at Western Michigan University. In addition to founding the Eleanor and Robert DeVries Student Art Gallery, Bob and Ellie support two major annual student awards—the Robert and Eleanor DeVries Annual Student Exhibition Award and the DeVries Professional Immersion Fund. While the beloved student gallery, as well as these two major awards are well known and cherished by students, faculty, staff and parents alike, Ellie’s prolific career as an accomplished artist and WMU alumni is perhaps less known. Earning both an MFA in Painting and an MA in Art Education from WMU’s School of Art in 1987 and 1988 respectively, Mrs. DeVries’ work has been included in more than 150 juried exhibitions and fifteen solo shows. A pair of paintings created while Mrs. DeVries was a student here remain on view in the University Art Collection Alumni Gallery located in the main hallway on the first floor of the RIchmond Center.
